IFC Section 510 specifies “all new buildings shall have approved radio coverage for emergency responders within the building based upon the existing coverage levels of the public safety communication systems of the jurisdiction at the exterior of the building.”
A Brief Overview of BDA, ERRC, & DAS
Emergency Responder Radio Communication System (ERRCS) is the general term for the systems that comply with IFC 510.
Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA):
– A two way radio communication for emergency responders to communicate inside a building to the outside world. This system transmits signal from outside the building to inside the building. It makes the signal consistent from inside to outside and ensures signal strength for first responders to safely communicate.
ProTech has been trained and certified to install and test these emergency systems to meet IFC 510 requirements.
Distributed Antenna System (DAS):
-While BDA is distributing frequency, it has different code requirements. Typically DAS is installed to increase company revenue or cellular strength but BDA is for first responders and is a life safety requirement. DAS and BDA are different frequencies and have different responsibilities.
